Mika Nakamura-Mather was a awarded the St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital Art Prize in 2012. This was for her concept of fading memories of home. The work entitled The World Outside the Palace Walls, was a Japanese folding screen constructed from panels of reclaimed timber.
Mika’s artwork is concerned with memory and the manner in which we carry fragments of our past with us wherever we go.
The silent sadness of Decay Theory addresses the phenomenon of memory loss as it relates to our notions of home and belonging . For most of us, there is no sudden, catastrophic loss of everything we remember, the process occurs slowly, noiselessly, piece by piece.
